The Lobster Boil, and other updates.

The Lobster Gala on Wednesday, May 29 is now 50% sold out, so be sure to call 416-363-8105 ext. 22 to reserve your tickets! The forecast is for sun…

What’s on? Late May sees the Maryland Blue Crab, aka the Soft-Shelled Crab, coming off the wharf.  We’re dusting them in cornmeal and frying them up for you.  The Dirt Under the Nails Gand is foraging ramps (wild leeks) and fiddleheads for us out in the East of the province.  The R.O.D. Prince oyster off our own lease in PEI is showing very nicely at the moment – we’re still seeing some winter character on the oyster before it goes into reproductive mode with the warmer waters coming. Lameques from the Baie de Chaleur in NB have returned (an oyster so friendly you can almost shuck it with your mind) and the Shan Daph from Big Island in Pictou, NS continue to impress.  Planning for the 25th Annual Ontario Oyster Festival is underway (July 21 – Oysterstrong – Eatin’ Ain’t Cheatin’). And the Oyster Garden is wearing its spring colours, despite the recent frost’s best efforts to kill off the new plantings. So what a great time to join us at the House …

(Plus, Rodney will be making the annual pilgrimage to Toad Hall in early June, so the viewing window is closing.  At least until the leaves turn)

From the Oyster Depot one can look out at low tide beyond The Hammocks to St. Peter’s Island, and there, just in front of you, lies the Oyster of tomorrow.

It’s here in Nine Mile Creek, Prince Edward Island, that Rodney’s Oyster Depot supplies quality Oysters across Canada and the United States to wholesalers and directly to restaurants and Oyster Houses. It’s also here where we’ve put our new way of growing Oysters into action.

In our quest for a true artisanal Oyster, Rodney’s Oyster Depot has adopted a fresh, modern method of cultivating, harvesting and marketing shellfish. With an eye to both sustainability and a minimal carbon footprint, Rodney’s Oyster Depot is a statement to the future, today. We see the Oyster as a crop in a watery field; each one an individual that needs to be tended and nurtured and understood. At ROD, we understand the Oyster and assist it in its growth journey. Our methods help yield a traditional larger sizing, with an eye to consistency of shape, and finally, given time, to the Oyster of tomorrow, with high meat yields and delectable flavors.

Rodney’s Oyster Depot is a good measure to GREAT OYSTERS!

6 DAYS OF LOBSTER

Every year in late Spring, we celebrate three things at the same time – the opening of the St. Lawrence Lobster Fishery, the “Official” Opening of the Oyster Garden here at 469 King, and of course, some nicer weather.  From May 27-June 1 we will be holding Lobster Week, with Lobster-themed specials every day, to salute this trifecta.

In the middle of the week is our Gala Lobster Dinner, on Wednesday, May 29th. At this annual Maritime Lobster Boil we offer Oysters, Clams, Lobster sashimi, wine from Fielding Estate and beer from Beau’s, live music from Tim Bradford and friends, and Lobsters boiled and cracked in the Garden, along with potato salad, green beans and pie. Tickets this year are $75, and include all foods, including a glass of wine – the only thing you have to cover is tax, grats and any other liquids that might seem appropriate. The corks pop at 7:00 PM sharp, and you should be there when they do.

As always, you must reserve a ticket beforehand – call Julius and Bronwen at 416-363-8105 ext 22 to put your name down on the list.  We look forward to seeing you.
